Exploring Why Consciousness Is All There Is
Yesterday, NASA released one of the most astounding images that human science has ever produced, 4.6 billion years in a single frame. Any human being serious about pondering the nature of their own existence would do well to hang this image on their wall, stare at it every day, and marvel at the ability to travel through time.
23 years ago, I was on the roof of my university’s Astronomy building, where our campus’s 2-meter telescope was hosted. It was a brutally cold night, and everyone up there was shaking in the freeze. Northern Ohio is the most miserable place in the entire State during the Winter.
As we were leaving, each of us in a hurry to get into the warmth of the stairwell, the Russian TA grabbed my elbow and pulled me out of the line of descent. In broken but comprehensible English, he told me he had just graded my paper and found it inspiring. He thanked me and wished me the best in my future career. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but reflecting on that exchange, I never saw him speak out loud or to anyone else that entire semester. But something he read in my paper caused him to act abnormally.
I take this as a compliment. It is with the humility of service that I have dusted off this old paper, given it a spit shine, and present it now to you in honor of this incredible product of science that has yielded the entire history of our Universe into a single frame of perception.
Considering the Copernican system of the revolution of planets around the Sun, it is reasonable to assume that the Sun revolves around a singularity in the center of the Milky Way galaxy.
The great Milky Way singularity is a point of time and space that has been “ruptured,” producing a gravitational pull of great density. Density is the mass of an object divided by its volume, and the greater an object's density, the greater its volume and the gravitational pull it exerts on objects in its orbit.
Since this galactic singularity has a strong gravitational attraction to the objects in space around it, it is reasonable to assume the center of the Milky Way Galaxy has a similar relationship with our Sun as the one between our Moon and Earth. As a result, our Sun rotates around the singularity at the heart of the Milky Way in a synchronous rotation that is observable and therefore predictable.
Some housekeeping for the mind regarding the Solar System:
The planets of our Solar System behave as moons of the Sun.
The asteroid belt is the ring around the Sun (like Saturn's rings).
The star field appears to turn daily toward the west because of the Earth's rotation on its axis every 23.5 hours.
Accordingly to Kepler’s Laws of Motion, because Venus and Mercury are closer to the Sun, they move faster than the other planets and therefore appear to “swing” around the Sun and back again.
Venus and Mercury are visible in the sky before or after the rising of the Sun, and this is when they are in conjunction with the view from the Earth.
Alternatively, they are not visible at all, meaning they are behind the Sun and in elongation with the line of sight from the Earth.
This motion and behavior, as visible from the Earth, also holds for the other planets.
Since the outer planets are at such great distances from the Sun, they are not as closely tied to the gravitational pull of the Sun as Mercury and Venus.
If planets oppose the Sun from the Earth, these planets appear in the night sky for several months. If they are in conjunction with the Sun, they appear for short periods or not at all.
Orbital periods are much more significant for outer planets because they are far from the Sun.
The Earth moves much faster in its smaller orbit because it is closer to the Sun.
This faster movement of the Earth produces the effect known as Retrograde Motion, where the outer planets appear to slow down and then move in the opposite direction. After some time, these planets begin moving in the opposite direction again.
This motion fooled many of our ancestors and led to theories of the planets having distinct characteristics and individual motions within the Solar System.
The Sun moves eastward through the ecliptic because it revolves around a singularity.
The effect of this “double revolution” causes the planets to spin on their axes, and the direction of spin and speeds of rotation for each of the planets are dependent on the contents of their atmospheres and whether they have been struck by more prominent objects in the Solar System (comets, asteroids, meteors, etc.).
Significant impacts on a planet affect the planet's rotation speed and angle afterward.
The great singularity that our Sun revolves around in the heart of the Milky Way galaxy is a force of nature so old and so large that it attracts and anchors all of the matter within the Milky Way to itself, just as the Sun anchors the planets and asteroids of our Solar System.
Picture a relationship between this great singularity and many smaller singularities that revolve around its core. Black holes in space, sucking matter and light into a darkness that bends time back on itself, but an entity still subject to the physical laws of our Universe.
Now picture the relationship between these smaller singularities and the stars that revolve around them throughout our Galaxy. Super dense neutron stars, meek yellow stars like our own, and red giants are sloughing their final mortality into the Universe, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Space vessels from civilizations like ours and possibly other life are zooming around the Milky Way Galaxy. Alternatively, maybe they lived long ago, and their light is just now reaching us.
On one of those planets, a living species capable of observing the motions of all these heavenly bodies set out over hundreds of years to understand our place within the clockwork movements of a Universe that seems deceptively predictable on the surface. The Human species has thirsted for answers to why we are here and whether we are alone, and Science alone will never provide them.
However, let us return to Science and expand on the gravitational relationship between singularities. Moving past our average Milky Way Galaxy, all other galaxies revolve around the Greatest Singularity, the Big Bang of Creation. The Big Bang is the point where time began when energy and matter exploded into space, a barrier marked by the Cosmic Background Radiation (COBE) discovered in the 1960s.
On this scale, there is no division between energy, meaning that energy can no longer be divided and recorded with instruments to be studied as gravity/electromagnetic/strong or weak nuclear forces—energy is One, complete and all-encompassing.
Different singularities likely have different sizes, volumes, and gravitational impacts on objects in space around them, as well as on objects of great mass at a further distance.
One law of physics is that great masses attract one another.
All singularities must have some relationship with more significant singularities in the Universe. Enormous masses attract one another through space and time, measured as the distance that light travels through a void.
Singularities in the hearts of Galaxies are connected through the density of their natures reflected through the laws of our physical Universe.
I posit that the only singularity that can have infinite density is the one at the center of the Big Bang of Creation, going back to the beginning of our Universe. All other singularities that followed The Big Bang must have a definable mass, volume, and density less than the original singularity, which birthed matter and time to create our Universe.
If the density of the Big Bang of Creation is infinite, its volume is also infinite. This then leads one to the conclusion that all moments after the creation of the Universe have definable mass, and that this mass is that of the Universe at large, including Humanity and our meager existence, with our often little search for meaning in the shards that lie around our cradles and our graves.
Matter is neither created nor destroyed; it merely changes form while releasing or capturing energy.
When the Universe began in an explosion of space, all the energy and matter that would ever exist was also created right then and has merely changed in form and direction since the beginning of time.
Based on their mass and position relative to the Big Bang singularity, Galaxies should exhibit observable rotation at different rates, yielding predictable differences in their motions.
It is possible that the billions of observed galaxies we have cataloged over the past centuries are not that far separated in space. However, from our limited vantage point, we have mistaken the movement over time for separate galaxies, which may simply be the same light smeared over billions of years.
Retrograde motion stumped Humanity for a long time until centuries of observation and deep intellectual study yielded a new framework for understanding these phenomena.
However, here we come to the end of Science as well as the end of Philosophy. Here, we stare into a mirror without an answer.
The Scientific Method reaches its limitation here because inside a singularity, space, time, and the laws of physics that govern the relationship between objects and energy in space break down into something unobservable to the human mind through sensory observation, induction, or deduction.
The behavior of the Universe is unobservable past this point of the infinite singularity because the Human mind thinks only in terms of time and space.
Each sensation delivered to the mind comes through the aesthetic forms of time and space and must therefore be interpreted according to the laws of logic that govern the processes and structures of human perception and thought. The thought process of human beings does not function outside the field of time. It is deeply limited in this regard.
I posit that every Human mind has a singularity beyond the event horizons of our egos, where time breaks down through the Memory mechanism. Our minds can recall events from long ago as if they were presently happening, with vivid detail and emotional saturation.
So, there is a singularity inside the mind where time breaks down, and there is a singularity at the Universe's beginning. Both singularities are points beyond which time breaks down, and we can no longer observe anything effectively.
However, are these two distinct singularities or the same singularity perceived from different points of view?
If these are the same singularity, what is the nature of the distance between them? With this question, all the branches of Science and academic study merge with the Philosophy, Religion, and Art of our species.
This is the great question of our age, and the absence of an answer about the significance of our existence as mortal creatures is the great soul-searching expedition of our time.
The Human species has developed evolving mythologies to explain our origin and place in this Universe for thousands of years, and none of these institutions of worship have yielded long-term value aiding the survival of our species.
Mythology yielded to Astronomy when the method of observing the behavior of objects in space over time became incredibly useful for Travel, Agriculture, and, of course, War.
Once the mind could predict the behavior of the natural world, the symbols of worship concocted in the ancient past were no longer helpful, except for influencing the most fearful among us.
Individual consciousness, a by-product of the modern age, has become a point of worship that will be surpassed in time.
There may come a point in the evolution of Humanity when this point of singularity is recognized as the revelation of fallibility, a point of humility that silences all questions. The “Humble Mind” is the one that graciously accepts its own fallibility.
The great philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986) was fond of saying, “The content of consciousness is consciousness.” He then asks, if a mind can empty itself of consciousness, of all experience, what happens next? A mind emptied of its own experience untethers itself from expectation about what is being observed.
Such a humble mind becomes the singularity, and there is no distinction between outer and inner space. There is an intelligence that operates at this point of absolution beyond the pettiness of any individual life or even the greatness of ancient galaxies dancing with each other at the edge of chaos. Such a humble mind bleeds compassion and wisdom, creating a new world filled with happy, connected people.
The humble mind meditates in the living moment.
The All-Seeing Eye open in this moment drives the Human heart into the action of bleeding love into the world. A simple person with this eye open knows neither pain nor pleasure, only an explosive inner peace that may indeed contain the answer to the questions we must never cease to ask.
