The Gorge (2025)

The Gorge tries to be many types of movies at once. It is mostly successful.

This movie has two great main characters. Being a great character means I believe in them as interesting people with interesting problems and compelling skills. I root for them to fall in love and be together.

In this sense, the film is primarily a romantic fairytale. But it's also a spy thriller featuring the most loved character in modern cinema—the assassin. One character is without loyalty to any country, only to a single parent who died and left them alone without a country or another person who loves them unconditionally. The other character has too much loyalty to their country because they couldn’t trust either of their parents, and never knew anything close to unconditional love. Both have known only duty, and duty ultimately betrays.

But The Gorge is also a horror movie with some heinous shit flying around the frame. Effective jump scares happen within the context of the action on screen. Finally, this is a superhero movie in that these two characters take heroic actions to support one another and as expressions of their commitment and sacrifice to love.

The Gorge is beautifully shot, edited, and scored. It's well-acted and well-written. This movie wastes no time treading narrative water. The characters move ahead of the action, and the action moves fast towards closure.

VERDICT: I will watch this film again and enjoy it more next time.
